MULTAN: A team of doctors has closed holes in the hearts of seven children through angiography instead of an open heart surgery at the Chaudhry Pervez Elahi Institute of Cardiology, Multan.
Institute executive director Dr Rana Altaf told reporters on Wednesday the patients were recovering well and would be discharged from the hospital soon.
An atrial septal defect (ASD) is a hole in upper septum in which blood starts mixing from one side to the other side while ventricular septal devices (VSD) is a hole in the septumof the ventricles in which deoxygenated blood mixes with the excogitated blood.
He said the atrial septal devices and ventricular septal devices had been installed in the hearts of these patient s through angiography.
He said that the institute was already providing treatment to the patients suffering from ASDs and VSDs but using surgery.
He said that Dr Prof Shakeel Qureshi from London, Prof Masood Sadiq of Children Complex of Lahore, Prof Kalimuddin of the Karachi Institute of Heart Diseases and other doctors conducted the angiographies.
These doctors were in Multan toattend the 13th National Pediatric Cardiology Conference by the Pervaiz Elahi institute.
They performed the surgery in a special training session for Pediatric Unit in charge Dr Younas, Dr Ahsan Baig and Dr Sohail who would conduct such angiographies in the future without surgeries.
He said the institute was the second health centre after the Lahore Children Complex which conducted such angiographies in the province.
He said that the cost of an angiography was between Rs75,000 to 100,000 and the provincial government paid the cost.
