Crime goes upward in 2014 in Vehari

VEHARI: The district police have released data on violence against women committed in 2014 in Vehari district, which shows the condition of womenfolk needs to be improved, while the crime rate against person and property also witnessed an upward trend.

In 2014, 440 women were abducted from the district, of them 429 were traced while the remaining cases are still under investigation.

The data reports 93 cases of rape, eight of gang rape, four of kidnap-for-ransom and five cases of acid attack on women.

According to the report, in 2014 the district police shot dead nine dacoits in four encounters.Poverty, unemployment and domestic disputes resulted in eight suicide attempts, of them hve proved to be fatal.

Police registered 11,735 cases related to people and property crime, of them 11,723 were resolved. The report adds that valuables worth Rs319 million were looted by robbers and thieves, of which 74 per cent were recovered and returned to their owners.

Police nabbed 4,725 proclaimed offenders, 2,614 absconders, 2,675 drug pushers and 184 drunkards.

Police registered 1,54,9 cases of illegal arms possession which involved 44 Kalashnikovs, 130 guns, 304 revolvers, 893 pistols, 72 carbines, 47 rifles and 154 guns.

Police seized 171 kilo of hashish, six kilo heroin, six kilo opium and 171 kilo charas while 2,613 caseswere registered against drug pushers.

Toxic liquor claims several lives in the district every year. In the last year, police seized 21,050 bottles of liquor and destroyed 187 distilleries.

The police also busted 76 gangs of dacoits and arrested 306 gangsters.

According to the report, the crime rate went up by 12 per cent as compared to 2013 in the district.

The data also states that 135 murder cases were registered in the year and 130 people were killed.

District Police Officer Sadiq Ali Dogar told Dawn on Friday eight blind murders were resolved by the Vehari police in the last year.

The report stated the year passed without bringing about anypositive change in the lives of people of Vehari. The district administration failed to resolve problems related to health, education and law and order.

People remained deprived of basic amenities such as electricity, drinking water and sanitation, and continued to suffer from shortage of teachers. Educational institutes faced security threats while broken roads remained pothole infested.
