Handcuffed robbery suspect escapes from police custody

ISLAMABAD: A handcuffed suspect, arrested by the capital police in connection with a robbery escaped from the outside of the lower courts on Friday.

A police officer told Dawn that the suspect was arrested on Thursday for allegedly robbing a Canadian couple of two mobile phones at gunpoint at Trail 5.

Secretariat police had registered a robbery case under section 392 of PPC.

The investigators of the case succeeded in tracing the gunman and arrested him from a wooded area near Islamabad Expressway.

The Secretariat police on Friday took him to lower courts for seeking his physical remand.

However, the handcuffed suspect ran away towards the Srinagar Highway, shortly after getting off the vehicle.

An assistant sub-inspector chased him, however, the suspect successfully crossed both the lane of the Srinagar Highway. The ASI met an accident after being hit by a vehicle at the highway and sustained injuries.

Meanwhile, a constable was dismissed from the police services for taking bribe from the owner of a vehicle with tented glasses.

According to an order issued from the office of SP Dolphin and Patrolling the constable was posted at Dolphin Islamabad.

On Jan 3, he was performing duty at Dolphin-56 in the jurisdiction of Humak police station, Islamabad. He stopped a vehicle bearing registration number DX-11 for checking.

The driver of the vehicle presented all relevant documents, including the licence of the weapon and ID card.

Despite being clear in all respects, and allowed the driver to go only after receiving Rs1,000 bribe for ignoring the tinted papers he had affixed on his vehicle.

A show cause notice was issued to the constable and called to provide him an opportunity to explain his position on Jan 7, but he could not give satisfactory reply to the investigators questions.

As a result the SP, Dolphin & Patrolling, Islamabad dismissed him from service as provided under Punjab Police Rules, 1975 duly adopted by ICT Police.
