ON a recent visit to the Karachi zoological gardens, I was disturbed to see the misery being faced by the caged animals. The lion, lioness, white lion, Syrian bear and the chimpanzees were clearly traumatised, and looked rather psychotic. They were pacing the confined spaces they had beenhoused in, while the visitors were climbing the railings and taking selfies. In doing so, they were shouting at these poor creatures almost constantly.
Given their misery, we must send these animals to the Safari Park or back into their natural habitat. We should turn this huge and wonderful space into a forest garden that could be the lungs of that area and provide clean and a healthy public space.
Moreover, the lanes inside the zoo were in a dilapidated condition, and there were beggars just about everywhere.
Something needs to be done in that regard as well.
Speaking at forums and advocating for making the environment better should not just be talk. Someone must do something to change things in the city.
