GILGIT: Fire damaged 30pc portion of historical wooden bridge in Danyoron Monday night, police and residents of the area told Dawn.
The wooden bridge is one of the oldest makeshift suspension bridges, which connects Danyor to Kundas in Gilgit,Danyore suspension bridge is a 510-feet-long bridge connecting a 10-metre-long tunnel with a Buddihist rock.
Currently the bridge closed for traffic, but pedestrians can cross the bridge.
The bridge was constructed over Hunza Nagar river in 1960, in 2017, GB government recognised itcultural heritage, which has the potentialto attract tourists.
Rescue 1122 saidAt around 10pm, a fire broke out on the wooden bridge and subsequently started spreading. The intensity of the fire was so high that flames started spreading rapidly.
Personnel of Rescue 1122 immediately reached the spot along with firefighting vehicles and started extinguishing the fire and brought the fire under control after two hours.
local volunteers also rushed to the area to take partin rescue operation.
According to source after hectic efforts , they controlled the firebut 30 percent of the bridge was damaged. The cause of fire remained unknown. Meanwhile, residents of Danyor staged a protest at Danyor chowk against the incident and demanded fair investigation into the incident. Jamil Nagri
