Goods transporters threaten strike

Bureau Report 2014-04-11
PESHAWAR: Goods transporters have rejected the notices issued by Municipal Corporation, Peshawar, (MCP) for vacating the Haji Camp Truck Stand and warned to announce wheel jam strike if any action is taken against them.

`We have acquired the land for the truck stand on a lease for 99 years when Gen Fazle Haq (late) was governor of the province and we will not move from the place,` said Haji Khawaja Mohammad, president of Goods Transport Owners Association, while speaking at a protest demonstration here on Thursday.

He said that the existing truck stand had been established according to directives of the former governor as substitute to another piece of land for the truck stand. `Now the MCP is forcing us to produce construction plans otherwise the shops and truck stands will be bulldozed,` he said.

Mr Khawaja said that in the past the truck stand was inside the city, but the former governor had forced them to shift from the area within 24 hours. He said that the transporters were playing a vital role in strengthening the local economy and it was duty of the government to facilitate them.

`We have held a meeting with the MCP administrator two weeks ago and apprised him of the problems being faced by the transporters, but our demands have not been accepted so far,` he said.
