YOUNG BEGGARS: I felt bad recently

2025-05-11
YOUNG BEGGARS: I felt bad recently while witnessing young children barely aged 12-14 years begging around the local mosque. The psychological effects of begging on young minds can be profound.

Constant exposure to rejection, humiliation and dependence on charity can erode their self-esteem and confidence.

Moreover, begging deprives them of education and skills that are essential for personal growth and future opportunities.

It is imperative that we take collective responsibility to address this issue. We must work towards providing these children access to education, healthcare and vocational training, enabling them to break free from poverty and begging.

Khateeb Khan Kotli, AJK SIGN LANGUAGE: A significant number of people with speaking and hearing impairments use sign language, but it is not widely recognised by the general public, even in critical sectors, like healthcare and law-enforcement. There is no unified curriculum for sign language learners at any educationallevelin Pakistan. This increases the risk of discrimination, and makes it very hard for people with disabilities to communicate effectively. The authorities should make sign language accessible to people with or without disabilities through training programmes in educational institutions.

Television channels can also promote sign language by hiring interpreters.

Syeda Arfa Ali Karachi SKILL-BASED LEARNING: The current generation in Pakistan appears to be prioritising degrees over the acquisition of genuine knowledge and practical skills.

While there is a surge in the number of students obtaining degrees,a noticeable gap exists in their practical abilities. This disconnect between qualification and competence raises concerns about the effectiveness of our education system. It is crucial to address this issue by focussing on skill-based learning, critical thinking and practical application of knowledge to ensure that graduates are well-equipped to contribute meaningfully to society.
