Ex-Urdu varsity VC booked for instigating violence

ISLAMABAD: As many as 40 students of Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST) have been sent to jail on a 14-day judicial remand.

Vice Chancellor FUUAST, Dr Zafar Iqbal, who is on forced leave, was also booked for `instigating` the students to violence.

These students were arrested on Tuesday for their alleged involvement in a brawl on the campus which left over a dozen injured.

`Today, we produced the 40 arrested students before a civil judge who sent the accused on a 14-day judicial remand,` said Station House Officer (SHO) Aabpara Police Station Abdul Rehman.

Currently, Dr Qaiser, Vice Chancellor of Karachi University, is looking after the affairs of FUUAST main campus in Karachi, while senior faculty member Dr Salman D.

Mohammad is running the affairs of Islamabad campus.

The FIR, which was registered by the FUUAST security director, stated that Dr Zafar Iqbal and six others were involved in instigating the 20-25 Seraiki students and an equal number of Pakhtun students to violence.

`These are baseless allegations against VC Dr Zafar Iqbal and we will counter it in the court of law,` said Qazi Sami, former spokesperson for the university, who was recently suspended by the current administration.
