Wapda clarification

2017-06-11
THIS is with reference to the statement by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister accusing the Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) of involvement in power thef t (Dawn June 9).

The allegations levelled against Wapda seem to be based on some misunderstanding, as it has nothing to do with matters relating to electricity in the wake of power sector reforms and the `unbundling` of Wapda`s power wing in 2007.

Since then, Wapda has dealt only with the construction of water reservoirs and hydropower projects and the operation and maintenance of the existing hydel power stations.

Except hydel generation in the public sector, all other matters of electricity from generation to distribution now relate to generation companies (GENCOs), the National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC), and power distribution companies (DISCOs). Thus, blaming Wapda in matters that have nothing to do with it is not correct.
