Seventy-five years ago Abdullah`s censorship

2023-06-11
LAHORE: Mir Abdul Aziz, General Secretary of the Jammu and Kashmir Press Conference, in a statement to the Press in Lahore today [June 10] said: `Sheikh Abdullah`s Government has completely gagged the pro-Pakistan newspapers by clamping on them a strict pre-censorship order. The censor machine which has been asked to move slowly has spared no pains to render the appearance of a daily newspaper impossible. Press matter submitted to the censor officers is usually returned to the papers after five or six days with the result that almost all the dailies have been forced to convert themselves into weeklies.

`To further suppress the voice of his critics,` continued Mir Abdul Aziz, `Abdullah`s Government has disallowed the pro-Pakistan newspapers the publishing of editorial and comments. This undemocratic attitude of the `Kashmir Government` ... reminds us of the methods employed by Hitler to suppress the voice of his critics. I appeal to UNO`s Kashmir Commission and the Pakistan Government to [bring this] to the notice of the democratic people of the world and get these wrongs rectified as soon as possible.` News agencies
