Malakand varsity students appear in exam after talks with admin

LOWER DIR: Hundreds of students of University of Malakand on Monday appeared in annual examination as per schedule after talks succeeded among Students Jirga, Adenzai Qaumi Jirga and varsity administration.

Students of affiliated colleges also took their first paper.

Student organisations called off their protest after successful talks during which the varsity agreed to some of their demands.Spokesman for the university Mirajul Hameed Nasari told journalists that examinations were held as per schedule in a conducive and peaceful environment.

He said that university agreed to provide free education to family members of Musa Khan, a student who was killed on May 30 in a road accident after he was allegedly expelled from hostel for keeping rabab.

He said that a library or a sports complex would be named after Musa Khan and all co-curricular activities would be allowed on the campus.

Mr Nasari said that all faculties, departments and sections were functional and students were peacefully participating in their activities.

The university was closed on June 3 after students announced to stage a sit-in on the main campus and boycott the annual examinations. Theywere protesting against the university administration over the death of Musa Khan.

The protesting students were demanding removal of vice-chancellor, pro-vice chancellor, provost, chief proctor and hostel warden. Adeznai Qaumi Jirga, a body of local elders, made efforts to cool down the situation and resolve the issue peacefully and it succeeded.

Meanwhile, score of students in Timergara staged a rally and rejected talks between Students Jirga and university administration.

The rally was addressed by president of Peoples Students Federation Hassanzeb Rughani, Najibullah Utmani, Ziaullah of Pakhtun Students Federation and Usman Khan of Islami Jamiat Talba. They alleged that varsity administration was responsible for the death of Musa Khan as he wasexpelled from the hostel at night for keeping a rabab with him.

DELEGATION: The special assistant to chief minister on social welfare and development, MPA Malik Liaquat Ali Khan, on Monday assured a delegation of elders from Lower Dir to take up the issues including establishment of University of Dir with chief minister and convince him to release funds for it.

The 40-member delegation was consisted of the representatives of Dir Think Tank (DTT) and Dir Overseas Pakistanis Association (Dopa).

The delegation told Mr Ali that most of the people were on the same page regarding establishment of University of Dir, Panjkora division and construction of Dir Motorway.

The lawmaker promised to take up the issues with chief minister.
