Main suspect in case of firing on Wasim`s car gets bail

KARACHI: A sessions court granted on Monday interim prearrest bail to main suspect in the case of firing on the car of former captain of Pakistan cricket team Wasim Akram following a minor accident in which the attacker`s vehicle hit his car.

Amirur Rehman, a retired Major of Pakistan Army, moved a pre-arrest bail application through his counsel and claimed that he was farmed in the case with mala fide intentions.

He said he was currently working as general manager at a private security company.

After preliminary hearing, the additional district and sessions judge (east), Nadeem Ahmed Khan, granted interim pre-arrest bail to the applicant against a surety bond of Rs30,000 till Aug 20.

The court directed him to join the investigation and issued a notice to the prosecutor directinghim to submit his arguments on the application till next hearing.

According to the prosecution, the legendary cricketer was on his way to the National Stadium on Aug 5 when a vehicle hit his car on Karsaz Road and after an exchange of hot words, the main suspect allegedly fired a shot which hit a tyre of the former fast bowler`s Mercedes, it added.

Meanwhile, a judicial magistrate remanded on Monday the driver of the vehicle in police custody for a week.

Police produced Altaf Ahmed in the court and sought his custody for questioning. Judicial magistrate (east) Kanize Fatima Zulfiqar handed him over to police on physical remand till Aug 17.

A case was registered under Sections 324 (attempt to commit murder), 337-H (2) (hurt by rash or negligent act), 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of 50 rupees) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code at the Bahadurabad police station.
