HYDERABAD: The inquiry committee comprising the Hyderabad DIG and three SSPs on Thursday interrogated Bashir Brohl, said to be the manager of former home minister Sharjeel Inam Memon arrested recently in the Oct 2014 kidnapping for ransom case, to find out as to who actually were the culprits.
Brohi was arrested by the Thatta police, who later handed him over to the Hyderabad police.
The committee, which held its meeting at the Hyderabad CIA Centre, also heard two policemen, Zulfikar Arain and Anwar Lakho, Dhabeji and Thatta SHOs and the official in charge of the Thatta CIA.
It is learnt that DIG Khadim Rind decided to sack Zulfikar Arain.Brohi is said to have admitted that he had received Rs7.5 million as ransom against the release of Asif Memon, a cousin of DIG Bashir Memon, and told the committee that he kept Rs1 million with himself and handed over the remaining amount to Iqbal Brohi, the alleged prime suspect in the case who is still at large.
Asif Memon remained in his kidnappers` captivity for 82 days.Brohi has been in police custody on a 15-day remand obtained from the Hyderabad Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC).
The committee intends to look into nexus between former Hyderabad SSP Pir Farid Jan Sarhandi and Bashir Brohi, considering the fact that the suspect was appointed in the city`s police while Mr Sarhandi had been serving as the SSP.
According to the source, the committee has been given a freehand to con-tinue with the investigation. `One should not be surprised if the policemen being called by the committee to ascertain facts are detained.
They may be detained in Jamshoro district under the supervision of SSP Tariq Vilayat,` said the source.
A source close to the committee told Dawn that it was puzzled over why Brohi was not arrested. SSP Sarhandi was dismissed and replaced with Irfan Baloch in November 2014.
The source said that the committee wanted to know whether Iqbal Brohi was involved in other kidnap cases.
`The committee also discussed a land issue between Mr Sarhandi and Sharjeel Memon as well as two separate FIRs (34/2011 and 35/2011) had been registered in the backdrop of the matter at the Hatri police station,` he said. The FIRs were later quashed.
