RAWALPINDI: Over 100 persons were killed, and more than 100 houses destroyed in village Bataret of Tangir area in Gilgit by an earthquake, which rocked the entire Tangir and Gupis areas on Monday last [Sept 5], according to reports... .
The Resident in Gilgit and Baltistan, Mr Nasrum Minallah ... visited the af fected areas in Tangir and Gupis, and conveyed the sympathies of President Bhutto to the affected families. He assured them that the Government would do everything possible to mitigate their sufferings.
The President has ordered the Resident to attach the highest priority to relief work, and sanctioned a sum of Rs. 2,00,000 initially. The relief operations are in full swing. Agencies [Meanwhile, as reported from Munich] Uproar broke out at the medals ceremony today [Sept 10] after West Germany [pulled] off the biggest upset in the hockey world by beating champions Pakistan 1-0 in the Olympics final.
The Pakistani team, angered by what they thought were bad umpiring decisions, first refused to take part in the award presentations.
Then, they refused to turn towards the West Germany flag while the national anthem was playing for the gold medal winners. The whole ceremony had been delayed after crowds of Pakistanis shouting abuse stormed onto the field at the final whistle.
