Motorcyclists deem bridge risky

GUJRANWALA: The overhead bridge on Gondlanwala level crossing, which was built for motorcycles some three years ago, has developed cracks because of rotten sheets.

Several motorcyclists blocked the bridge on Monday and threatened to get a case registered against the city district government in case of any causality on the bridge.

The Rs25 million bridge is 30 feet high and four feet wide.

Up to 15,000 motorcyclists use the flyover every day. They demanded that the nyover be repaired instantly or they would block GT Road.

City Assistant Commissioner Attiqur Rehman chose not to comment, saying the matter pertained to roads or provincial highway departments.

TALKS: Talks between the Gujranwala Market Committee chairman and Fruit and Vegetable Market Commission Agents Association remained inconclusive on Monday on the issue of cleanliness fee collection.

Commission agents` president Haji Siddig has refused to pay the Rs900,000 per month fee to the market committee,saying that the administration had not provided better facilities to them despite collecting the fee for years.

He said the market committee had sold plots of markets but spent nothing on the infrastructure of the markets.

Market committee`s newly-appointed chairman Irfan Muzafer Cheema is pressing the agents to pay the fee regulatory, promising better facilities. Commission agents demanded that the district coordination officer get audited the funds of the committee.

PHA: The Parks and Horticultural Authority (PHA)restoredonMonday the services of 200 adhoc employees.

At a meeting held at Ghushan-i-Iqbal, PHA Chairman Taufiq Butt announced restoring the employees, urging them to make the city clean and beautiful. The employees thanked the PHA chairman, who is also a PML-N MPA, for the restoration of their job.

RESULT: Gujranwala Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education Chairman Prof Aslam Saikhu announced the result of intermediate examination, part I, on Monday. Of the 106,729 candidates, 51,264 passed.
