COLOMBO: Demonstrators shouting proPakistan and anti-Hindu slogans were first lathi-charged and later tear-gassed in four areas within Srinagar on Tuesday. Over 50 injured demonstrators were dumped into police vans standing by and taken to unknown destinations.
Over 1,000 demonstrators were protesting against conferring proprietary rights of Muslim evacuee property on outsiders.
At first, the demonstrators in four processions were very peacefully walking slowly with black flags and placards. Suddenly armed policemen in severaljeeps and vans surrounded the processionists and ordered them to disperse. When the latter refused, policemen in full strength lathi-charged, injuring a large number. Angry demonstrators did not give in and began pelting stones and sticks, whereupon the police fired several rounds of teargas and brought the situation under control.
[Meanwhile, according to an agency in Chicago,] A force of 2,500 National Guardsmen, equipped for street fighting, have moved into Chicago ready to counter the next move by extreme Hippie demonstrators who have `declared war` on the city. Correspondent
