Ashes of PM`s effigy haunt Seraiki activists

MULTAN: The Seraikistan Democratic Party has called the meeting of its executive body on Wednesday (today) to discuss either the party chairman should turn himself into police or approach the court for ball in a case lodged against party workers and him for allegedly burning an effigy of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday.

Lodhran police lodged a case against Seraikistan Democratic Party Chairman Rana Faraz Noon and 49 others.

Eleven party workers were granted bail from courts on Tuesday.

Mr Noon calls the case baseless, saying they had protested against the prime minister for not making any announcement regarding the creation of a Seraiki province during his visit to the district last week.

`It was a peaceful demonstration that is our democratic right and we will continue holding protests till the creation of the new province,` he said.

He said they did not burn the efügy of the prime minister but it was the efñgy of `Takht-i-Lahore`He said the police had also raided party`s secretariat in Multan, besides arresting party`s coordinator Advocate Mahmoodul Hasan in Kehror Pacca.

`Even 10 women have been implicated in the case despite the fact not even a single woman participated in the protest, he said.

He demanded the government quash the case otherwise `we will extend our protest across the wasaib`.

The Kehror Pacca city police have lodged the case under sections 148 and 149 of Pakistan Penal Code and 16 Maintenance of PO on the complaint of Sub-Inspector Khalid Mehmood on Sunday.

The police alleged that 20 nominated accused, including Mr Noon, 10 women and 20 unidentified people blocked Mailsi Road for traffic and chanted slogans against the government and burnt the efHgy besides using foul language against the prime minister.

The FIR said that Mr Noon put the effigy on fire while his supporters beat the effigy with wooden rods.

Police have been raiding places to arrest the people.
