Students debate importance of human rights education

RAWALPINDI: Speakers at a debate competition emphasised the need to include human rights education in the curriculum, and elaborated on human rights and the emerging role of the youth in this regard.

They also highlighted the importance of information sharing to raise awareness about fundamental rights and human rights laws.

The debaters were participating in a debate on the `Importance of Human Rights Education` at the Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi on Thursday, organised by the of ficer of the senior tutor in collaboration with the Human Rights Commission.

Arid university Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Rai NiazAhmad presided over the competition, which was attended by Human Rights Commission Director General Abdul Hafeez, and the university`s principalofhcers,deans, directors, members of faculty and students.

Over 50 students from various departments participated enthusiastically and eloquently, and were appreciated by their audience.

Speaking at the competition, Dr Ahmad highlighted the importance of the topic of debate and the objectives of organising such events, and emphasised the need for human rights to be introduced as a subject in the curriculum.

He also expressed the hope that such activities continue at all levels in the future, and said students should work passionately for the progress and development of the country by respecting human rights.

He advised students to make themselves role models for others, and to respect and work for human rights.

At the end of the competition, the chief guest distributed prizes among the winners.
