YDA strike...

2016-11-11
LAHORE: The young doctors` strike followed by a sit-in on The Mall suffered a `serious setback` on Thursday when scores of their colleagues resumed duties at various departments and wards of the Mayo Hospital.

Meanwhile, senior faculty members of the King Edward MedicalUniversity also steppedin for the poor patients by offering strong resistance to the protesting doctors by denying them support for the strike.

The emergency ward and the outpatient department of Mayo Hospital was operational throughout the day after senior doctors took charge.

A senior administrative doctor told Dawn that the striking doctors who had been ensuring closure of the OPD and other departments daily had to face embarrassment in the morning when Prof Dr Asad Aslam snubbed them for their `immoral`activities.

`A group of students at the eye ward besides the neutral lot put upfierce resistance when young doctors attempted to shut down the operation theatre.

`The situation was no different at some other departments, especially medical units where senior medics firmly asked the striking doctors to go away as provision of healthcare facilities to patients is their top priority,` said the administrative doctor.

The senior doctor said most of the house of ficers either have resumed duty or conveyed to the administration that they would join on Friday.

Meanwhile, young doctors shut down the OPD of the Lahore General Hospital after a clash with paramed-ical staff over parking of a car.

Eyewitnesses said a doctor, an active activist of the YDA at the hospital, parked his car near the main entrance of the department.

A security guard requested him to park the car elsewhere as it was hindering movement of patients on stretchers to and from the emergency ward. The doctor got enraged and allegedly starting slapping the guard.

Some paramedics passing nearby intervened and attempted to stop the doctor from beating the guard.

However, the doctor started misbehaving with them as some of his colleagues had also reached there.

Some aged paramedical employees again attempted to pacify the situation, but the young doctors continued misbehaving with them. This infuriated junior paramedical employees who gave the doctors a sound thrashing.

Later, the young doctors kept the OPD shut for more than two hours when the ho spital administration intervened and pacified both parties.
