Road safety drive focused on youth planned

KARACHI: Inspector General of Sindh Police Dr Syed Kaleem Imam has issued a host of directives to police officers regarding traffic awareness ranging from sensitising motorbike manufacturing firms to make it mandatory that no bike be sold without a helmet, to establishing units to create awareness among students of traffic rules, it emerged on Saturday.

All motorcycle factories/ distributors and showrooms unions/associations must be sensitised through meetings to ensure that every motorbike is delivered and sold with a helmet.

`Meeting with All Pakist an Petroleum Dealers Association should be conducted to sensitise importance [of] the use of helmet by motorcyclists and the focus of these meetings would be to ensure that no fuel is sold to any motorcycle rider without a helmet, observed the IG.

However, he added that resources be utilised to get sponsors for a `free helmet distribution` campaign.

Mr Imam directed the officers to ensure coordination with the administration of private and government schools and compile details such as drivers` name, CNIC, vehicles` description, type of fuel used in vans, sitting capacity of vehicles and other relevant information for security purposes.

`Overloading of vehicles must be discouraged, especially school vans,` said the IG. `On the pattern of Motorway Police, the mobile education units should be established,` suggested the IG Sindh, adding that the mandate of the unit would be to educate student s regarding traffic rules.-Staff Reporter
