Plan to set up human rights offices in all dists

LAHORE: Punjab Human Rights Minister Khalil Tahir Sindhu says a summary for establishing offices of human rights and minority affairs in all 36 districts of Punjab has been moved to the government to avert Kot Radha Kishan-like incidents in future.

He was speaking at an event held to mark the International Human Rights Day.

The function was organised by South Asia Partnership-Pakistan under the banner of REAT Network in collaboration with Directorate of Human Rights, Ministry of Law, Justice and Human Rights here on Wednesday at a local hotel.

He said violations of human rights were committed in the name of religion to settle personal grudges.

He said the state by itself became a party to the case of Kot Radha Kishan and gave a message that such incidents should never be repeated.

Mr Sindhu emphasised that rights of every human being should be respected.

The minister said members of the assembly were concerned about the misuse of blasphemy laws.

Speaking on the occasion, retired Justice Nasira Javed Iqbal said human rights could not be ensured just through laws. `Rights can be ensured through positive behaviour and actions.

She advised that rights of people should be respected, protected and ensured without distinction of caste or creed.

MPAs Ramesh Singh Arora, Nighat Sheikh, Farzana Butt, Provincial Chief Commissioner for Child Rights Nasreen Farooq, Regional Director for Human Rights Ms. Lubna Mansoor, Principal of University Law College Dr Amanullah Malik, National Programme Coordinator SAP-Pakistan Hameed Gondal and others attended the event.
