ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Monday arrested eight people for their alleged involvement in the over Rs11.5 billion modarba scam after the Islamabad High Court (IHC) rejected their bail applications.
Mufti Ehsan and Ghulam Rasool Ayubi and their accomplices are allegedly involved in the two modarba scam cases of Rs8.2 and 3.3 billion.
In August last year, both the accused were granted bail by the IHC after they produced a schedule for the return of the amounts to the affected people.
Mufti Ehsan had assured the court that he would return the amount in 18 months while Ayubi was scheduled to pay back the dues in 12 installments. However, after their release on an interim bail, both the accused backtracked from their commitments to pay back the money.
Subsequently, Sardar Muzaffar Abbasi, the additional deputy prosecutor general NAB, moved an application with the IHC seeking the rejection of the bail pleas of the eight accused persons.
Theaccused, ontheotherhand, also filed separate bail petitions with the court which were heard by an IHC division bench on Monday.
Mr Abbasi argued before the court that since the accused had failed to honour their commitments and despite assuring the court did not even pay a single installment, they were not entitled to any relief.
The bench then dismissed the bail petitions of all the accused af ter which NAB officials arrested them outside the court building.
