LAHORE: The Punjab Assembly unanimously adopted on Tuesday a resolution moved by Leader of Opposition Mian Mahmoodur Rasheed of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) against Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain`s statement calling upon the army to take over control of the country.
The resolution termed the statement anti-democratic and said the house would continue to oppose such thinking.
The resolution was taken up out of turn on the request of the opposition leader, although Speaker Rana Muhammad Iqbal initially refused to do so.
Our Staff Reporter in Karachi adds: A statement issued by members of the MQM coordination committee said: `We thank the honourable members of the Punjab Assembly who tabled the resolution against Mr Hussain and got it passed.
They said the legislators` opposition to the MQM would help spread the party`s message in Punjab because the resolution reflected a feudal mentality.
They also said that the poor people of Punjab were with the MQM.
