Vanishing playgrounds

2017-03-12
PAKISTAN is one of the few countries where sports and sportsmen are neither encouraged nor sponsored generously.

With the passing of time, the number of playgroundsis also disappearing.

Where there are playgrounds, they are not being properly maintained. In fact, they have been turned into dumping grounds for refuse. In many localities, playgrounds are used for parking vehicles or have been encroached upon for constructing mosques.

The Bizerta Line playground has been turned into a shopping centre while those of Baghdadi, Lyari, Mominabad and Orangi have been turned into police stations. The Railway Stadium on LL Chundrigar Road and the KPT Stadium are limited to holding wedding ceremonies and other functions. So, children and youths are left with no alternative but to play cricl(et on streets and roads.

The authorities concerned should ensure that playgrounds remain as such for good.
