THE government`s action of reimbursing the farmer through subsidy on fertilisers is heartening. To date the government has paid Rs 13.1 billion to fertiliser producers and importers. These companies had contributed Rs 21.lbillion to the subsidy programme.
The fertiliser manufacturers have also asked the government to address all matters relating to farmers` benefits on priority. This industry is playing a pivotal role in economic growth by encouraging new technologies for higher crop-yields and promoting modern farming.
In the next budget, the government should allow tax rebates and supply gas and electricity at lower rates. It should also give other incentives and concessional policies for growth in the fertiliser sector.
Together, the government and the private sector can avert the looming crisis of food-security, and ensure economic stability in the country.
This should be the government`s top-priority in the agenda for the upcoming national budget.
