PU begins work on medical college project

LA HOR E: The Punjab University has started working on the establishment of a medical college on its premises on Wahdat Road.

Punjab Higher Education Minister Syed Raza Ali Gilani on Tuesday inaugurated the office for the medical college at the undergraduate block ofthe varsity.

A varsity official told Dawn that the administration had hired an expert for preparation of PC-I of the project.

`The process of getting approval from the Pakistan Medical Dental Council is under way. As the syndicate had approved establishment of a PU medical college, the construction work would begin after approval of the PC-I,` he said.

Initially, the college would be affiliated either with Jinnah or Shaikh Zayed hospital, he said, adding the varsity had also planned to build its own hospital.

Addressing the ceremony, Mr Gilani said he had announced setting up of the medical college and now steps were being taken practically for its establishment.

`I am paying special attention to improve world ranking of the PU and in this regard the government will utilise maximum resources. But this dream can only come true if teachers play theirroleforraising standard ofeducation on campus,` he added.

The minister said the government was also establishing faculty development academies to equip teachers with modern teaching skills. There would be no student organisation on the campus and students should only focus on their studies, he added.

PU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Zafar Mueen Nasir said the PU Medical College would be the best in town.

Briefing on the salient features of the college, Dr Muhammad Awais claimed that it would be a world class medical college where best healthcare services and quality education would be provided.
