HIV spread in Taunsa Joint mission discusses preventive measures

DERA GHAZIKHAN: Alarmed at HIV/AIDS spread among children hailing from Taunsa Sharif, a highlevel delegation (Joint Expert Mission) visited Dera Ghazi Khan and held a consultative meeting at the Commissioner Office on Friday Chaired by Commissioner Ashfaq Ahmad Chaudhry, the meeting discussed strategies for preventing HIV and other deadly diseases.
The meeting was also attended by DC Muhammad Usman Khalid, MPA Salahuddin Khosa, representatives from the Punjab AIDS Control Programme, World Health Organization, Unicef, Healthcare Commission, UNDP, civil society representatives and administrative officers.
The meeting identified the causes of HIV/AIDS spread and formulated counter-strategies. Emphasis was placed on cracking down on quackery as repeated use of syringes by quacks was listed as a major contributor to HIV transmission.
The commissioner ordered sealing of quacks` clinics and strict legal action under relevant laws against violators. The meeting was told that two HIV diagnostic and treatment centers are operational in the district.
In Taunsa center 5,400 people have been screened, with 64 of them suspected HIV cases. The meeting was further told 175 quack-run centers in Taunsa have been sealed.
The expert mission visited other areas of Taunsa Sharif to meet parents of HIV-affected children, and held sessions with stakeholders. Correspondent
