Delayed project

2015-05-12
THIS refers to an important pending project. An agreement for construction of a flyover at the Kahna railway crossing in Lahore on a build, operate, transfer (BOT) basis, with private investment, was signed between the Lahore Development Authority and a private company on Jan 9.

According to the agreement, the private company had to construct the 1.5km-long flyover at Kahna Kacha-Defence Road railway crossing with a cost of Rs3bn.

This project has not started yet, and it needs urgent attention and timely action by authorities concerned. The Kahna railway crossing, being the main railway crossing, witnesses frequent gate closures to allow trains to pass. As a result, the Defence Road traffic braves long delays wasting precious time of passengers, besides increasing fuel consumption.

Defence Road is a major link between Multan Road, Raiwind Road, Ferozepur Road and Defence Housing Society.

A flyover will ease the traffic flow at this junction. It will benefit the residents of southern Lahore. It will also provide anapproach to the newly-developed vegetable and fruit market, besides facilitating movement towards the metro bus service starting point at Gajjumatta and Chungi Amarsidhu and will save time and fuel.
