The anti-smoking ordinance was issued in 1992 but its implementation is negligible.
Smoking is rampant at public places,of fices, restaurants, malls, buses, trains and even educational institutions.
Loose cigarettes are being sold openly near schools and colleges.
If you visit shops in lane No.3, Rahat Commercial, DHA phase VI, opposite DHA College at about 2.00pm, you will find more than a dozen school and college students in uniform buying cigarettes.
Awareness about the dangers of smoking is nil.
Even passive smokers are at risk of cancer and various diseases.
The media and educational institutions should play their part in informing the public, especially the younger generation, about the dangers of smoking tobacco.
The manufacturing and selling of cigarettes should be banned altogether.
