APROPOS Dawn Metropolitan report (April 30), there was a fire on the ninth floor of a multistorey building in Karachi.
It spread all the way to the 17th floor.
The fire spread through airconditioning ducts. Earlier, a similar accident happened in a Karachi hotel causing several f atalities.
Luckily, there were no casualties in this incident. The airconditioning plant should be shutdown the moment any fire is detected.
One hopes that multistorey building owners will take notice and make it a part of their standard operating procedure to avoid spreading of fire.
S. Nayyar Iqbal Raza Karachi (2) ONE can notice a number of high-rise buildings coming up in Karachi almost in every area from Nazimabad to Clifton.
While I do agree that in Karachi we need such buildings to accommodate the ever-growing population the question is: do we have a firefighting plan to meet emergency if there is a fire in any building? The fire in a hotel in the recent past at Sharea Faisal is one example.
Besides, do we have suf ficient water, electricity and proper sewage lines to cater to these complexes? I hope the building control authority and other relevant agencies are keeping an eyeon basic requirements once these buildings are fully occupied.
Further, the traf fic department should also plan for the traffic mess that will be created as most of these buildings have shops on ground floor.
