Dynasties and cults

2022-05-12
THIS refers to the article `The new old order` (April 20). Indeed, the current political chaos has rattled and shaken the democratic pillars of the country. We have been hearing criticism of dynastic politics.

It is now cult versus dynasty, increasing more filth to this political mess.

Since independence, the power has been with two major `political dynasties`.

Dynastic politics hinders the democratic process as it brings to the fore the old triedand tested faces. Similarly, in the new government, too, with a few exceptions, all political parties are essentially `family enterprises`.

That has been one of the major reasons for the weakness of the democratic process. The very composition of the latest cabinet shows how deeply entrenched dynastic politics is in the country.

On the other hand, we have seen the rise of cultism which, too, has led to negative and serious repercussions. Such an attitude has damaged democracy and, in fact, is more dangerous, evil and destructive than dynastic politics.

In a nutshell, these bizarre regimes, both dynastic and cultist, have resulted in hyperinflation, fragile economy, democratic isolation and civil unrest. It is, therefore, imperative to protect democracy instead of manipulation for the lust of power, because the future of the country is more important than power games.
