Pensioners` woes

2015-06-12
I R ETIR ED from a university in 2012, af ter 35 years of service, and became a pensioner.

My pension is deposited in my bank account. I also receive small sums as dividends from investments in the stock market, which is taxed at source. Being a pensioner, I am not required to file tax returns.

Being a retired professor, I am categorised as a non-filer of income tax returns. The first penalty is the rate of tax on dividend from securities, which was 10pc for filers and 15pc for non-filers, and increased in the budget to 12.5pc and 17.5pc, respectively.

The second penalty, imposed, is the 0.6pcs tax on all banking transactions, in addition to the already existing withholding tax on cash transactions.

This means that when I withdraw pension, or conduct any banking transaction, I have to pay this penalty.

Similarly there are other penalties for non-filers.

Dr (Prof) TauseefQuraishi Karachi (2) THE 2015-16 budget, does not meet pensioners` aspirations.

It provides them no relief in the wake of the soaring prices. The paltry increase of 7.5 per cent in their monthly pension is an eye-wash.

Besides, old pensioners and new pensioners have been treated alike which is against all canons of justice and fairplay.

The old pensioners deserve a higher increase in pensions than their counterparts who retired later and receive almost double the pension. The government should be more considerate in case of old pensioners. Please undo this injustice.
