PESHAWAR: Some senior lawyers of the provincial capital have rejected a call of the Pakistan Bar Council for strike on June 14 over the references filed against superior court judges including Justice Qazi Faez Isa of the Supreme Court and said the Supreme Judicial Council was the relevant body to decide the matter and the stril(e would weaken the people`s confidence in judicial system.

Addressing a news conference at the Peshawar Press Club on Tuesday, Abdul Sattar Khan, Shah Faisal Utmankhel, Tahir Waseem Diyal, Sardar Hashmat Nawaz Sadozai, Najeebullah Khan and other members of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Bar Council and Peshawar High Court and district bar associations said they would not become part of the strike.

They also described the demand of the Pakistan Bar Council and Supreme Court Bar Association for the resignation of attorney general for Pakistan Anwar Mansoor Khan and federal law minister Mohammad Farogh Naseem unreasonable and irrational.

The lawyers said they believed in the rule of law and supremacy of Constitution and won`t participate in any action contrary to the law, which endangered democracy and peace and disturbed `public tranquility`.

Appreciating the role of senior judges, they said the Supreme Judicial Council was the relevant forum to decide the lawfulness of the references and whether they were based on mala fide intentions.

The lawyers said the Pakistan Bar Council, the highest elected body of lawyers in the country, would ensure the supremacy of the law irrespective of its members` affiliation with political parties.-Bureau Report
