LAHORE: The police department says the low conviction rate in sexual crime cases lodged across Punjab can`t be entirely attributed to the police, rather the prosecution is also responsible for the fate of these cases in the court of law.

A spokesperson for the Punjab police said a majority of the cases are still under trial. He said these figures do not include a large number of false cases due to old enmity, elopement, consensual sex etc.

The resiling of witnesses/complainants during trial seals any chance of conviction, he said, adding the department was trying to get detailed and specific analysis of the given figures regarding low conviction rate in sexual crime against women and children. Staff Reporter
