SWABI: The Topi bridge, which was opened to traffic about two months ago, was closed on Tuesday due to its faulty structure and imminent danger to loaded vehicles and lives of people.

Sources in the communication and works department said that the total cost of the project was Rs24 million.

When contacted, Swabi Deputy Commissioner Mustasim Billah told Dawn that Usman, assistant director of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Highway Authority (KPHA), had visited the site along with him and he was reluctant to allow traffic over the bridge.

`We have immediately stopped the flow of traffic on the bridge because we could not take risk. We have seen that one of the gain pillars of the bridge has been exposed completely,` he said.

He said so far KPH A had not given green signal to the district administration to allow traffic on the bridge. The entire traffic has been converted to the Kotha causeway once again, he said.

In May, the opposition parties had pointed out that the huge beams could not get the required space on the pillars, thus making structure ofthe bridge dangerous. However, traffic on the bridge was resumed.

A photo of the bridge went viral on social mediain May and once again after the reports of exposing pillar.
