Dir police foil bid to marry off minor girl in swara

TIMERGARA: A court on Tuesday sent six accused arrested in a swara case into one day police custody as raids for arrest of the rest of the jirga members involved in the illegal practice continued.

The six arrested persons were produced in the court of civil judge I Chakdara Zafarullah Momand.

Ouch police on Tuesday foiled a `swara` bid wherein a minor girl was supposed to be married to a 45-year-old man to settle an honour-related dispute between two families in Kitiari area of Adenzai, police and residents said.

The police arrested six accused, including father of the girl, her expected husband, a cleric who solemnised the marriage and three jirga members after recovering the girl from his uncle`s house in Swat. Sources said a youth of Kitiari area had illicit relations with a girl which came to surface after Eid.

A jirga comprising local elders decided on July 4 that the accused would marry the girl, while in return an eight-yearold sister of his would be married off to a 45-year-old man,the father of the girl he had illegal relations with.

The sources said the jirga was held late night.

Ouch police on the directives of SDPO Mohammad Shah raided the houses of the people involved in the case and arrested six persons. Sources said earlier a cleric had refused to solemnise the nil(ah of the minor girl and later the marriage was done by another cleric.
