Costa acrobatics rescue ragged Chelsea at Swansea

2016-09-12
SWANSEA: Diego Costa was centre stage and scored twice, including an 81st-minute equaliser from an overhead kick, but could not prevent Chelsea losing their 100 per cent Premier League record in a controversial 2-2 draw at Swansea City on Sunday.

The result left Manchester City two points clear of them at the top of the table.

The fiery Spain striker`s acrobatics a deflected but spectacular overhead bicycle kick after Branislav Ivanovic`s shot had been sent spinning in his direction -salvaged a point for Chelsea at Liberty Stadium aftertwo defensive blunders in a three-minute span almost gifted Swansea a victory.

It all added up to one of the most dramatic Premier League games of the season so far, which Chelsea, who had 28 attempts on goal, dominated for almost an hour.

Costa scored in the 17th minute as Antonio Conte`s team took control of the game.

Goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski elected not to collect a cross and Federico Fernandez`s two poor headers failed to clear the danger.

Oscar pounced on the loose ball and neatly teed up Costa tounleash an impressive curling finish from just inside the Swansea area.

Swansea manager Francesco Guidolin changed tactics from a misfiring 3-5-1-1 system before halftime, withdrawing the disgruntled Welsh international Neil Taylor for Gambian winger Modou Barrow.

In the 59th minute goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois gave away a penalty by fouling Gylfi Sigurdsson, who converted it to equalise.

Then Gary Cahill was dispossessed by Leroy Fer and apparently fouled, but Fer was allowed to go on and score.

But Costa, who also receivedhis third yellow card in four games, equalised with an effort that might have been penalised for dangerous play and now has four goals in four games this season.

After that, only a brilliant Fabianski save denied Costa a hat-trick and the visitors all three points.

LIVERPOOL ROUT LEICESTER In Saturday`s late game, a breathless attacking display from Liverpool helped them to a 4-1 victory over champions Leicester City, who have now lost two of their four games so far.Leicester lost only three games last season and it doesn`t look like they will deliver another fairytale title success this season.

Perhaps Liverpool could be the unlikely title challengers this time round.

Liverpool have already beaten Arsenal and Leicester this season, and drawn at Tottenham Hotspur.

In front of the biggest Anfield crowd since May 1977, 53,000 fans watched Liverpool mark the unveiling of their extended main stand with a a vibrant attacking display to outclass Claudio Ranieri`s men, with Roberto Firmino scoring twice and SadioMane and Adam Lallana finding the net as the champions` limitations were exposed.

`It was a good challenge because we can be really strong, but Leicester have big quality and we had to show we believed in our style. It was a good performance in a wonderful place, manager Jurgen Klopp said.

Firmino opened the scoring with a clinical finish in the 13th minute and Mane increased Liverpool`s advantage with a close-range effort in the 31st.

Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva, playing out of position in central defence, gave Leicester a lifeline with a terrible 38th-min-ute backpass that Jamie Vardy drilled into the empty net.

However, the home side`s offensive class told and they restored their two-goal advantage after the break when Lallana rifled a fine shot into the top corner in the 56th minute as Leicester`s defence were undone, before Firmino added a late fourth from a searing counter attack and left Leicester contemplating a lacklustre start to their title defence.

Next up for Leicester: A break from league play and its first ever match in the Champions League, against Club Brugge on Wednesday.-Agencies
