29 laggar falcons seized by Rangers

KARACHI: Rangers personnel caught a wildlife trafficker and seized 29 local laggar falcons from his possession during a routine checking at the Toll Plaza checl(-post near Jamshoro on the Superhighway early on Sunday morning.

Just a day before, paramilitary soldiers had caught 22 high pedigree saker falcons.

The soldiers noticed the falcons on the bus, coming from Taunsa Sharif in Southern Punjab and going to Karachi, and immediately called the Sindh Wildlife Department (SWD) staffers posted at the check-post to inspect the birds.

The falcons were seized and a fine of Rs15,000 was imposed on suspected wildlife trafficl(er Mohammad Asif Nawaz since trade in falcons is banned under the wildlife protection laws.

SWD deputy conservator Ghulam Mohammad Gadani said the birds whose eyes were stitched and looked tired because of long journey had been brought to the SWD office where their eyes had been unstitched and they had been fed meat so that they could regain strength.
