Security and civilians

2017-10-12
APROPOS the new report `ANP slams centre for ignoring Balochistan` (Oct 10).

The ANP`s provincial president, Mr Asghar Khan Achakzai, in his press conference criticised the federal government for depriving Balochistan of its share in development projects under CPEC.

He also highlighted another issue -the harsh treatment faced by civilians at the hands of law enforcement officials. He said there were complaints about the law enforcement officials` use of excessive force and harsh language. I agree with him that excesses are being committed in the name of security measures.

The recent incidents of a video going viral about police escorts of a VIP threatening a motorist with physical harm in Karachi and an engineer being manhandled by security officials at the inauguration of the Sahiwal power plant substantiate my argument.

The security of VIPs and foreigners provided by any agency is paramount but it must not be at the cost of the self-respect and freedom of the citizens.
