The Order of Words`

2017-10-12
APROPOS the article `The Order of Words` by Nadeem F. Paracha (Oct 8).

The writer has carried out painstaking research about the sequence of the words: Unity, Faith and Discipline.

According to him, the Quaid-i-Azam used these words in that order in 1941 but changed the order to unity, discipline and faith in 1947 and yet again to faith, discipline and unity in 1948.

Apparently the Quaid didn`t consider the order of these words to be important and the writer also seems to agree, but he goes on to say that although the overall meaning doesn`t change, the words of the motto must be reverted to the `original` because, according to him, Gen Zia changed the motto by putting faith before unity and equated the word faith with Islam! The question is, will it matter if the national motto is changed to any of the three `originals` of the Quaid? Do we have a national motto at all? Do we have faith inour national vision and goals? Are we making a collective endeavour for it with unity of purpose? Are we disciplined in our endeavour? Rather than Zia-bashing thereisaneedtoponderoverthese questions.
