Robbers kill man, take away $8,000 drawn from bank

KARACHI: A 55-year-old man was shot dead by robbers over resisting a mugging attempt in North Nazimabad on Tuesday, the Paposh Nagar police said.

Saleem Shakeel Alvi drew $8,000 from an MCB Bank branch in North Nazimabad and was on his way home in a car driven by his son, Danish Alvi, when armed motorcyclists intercepted them near the Lal Masjid traffic intersection, said Gulberg SP Chaudary Asad Ali.

Saleem had hidden dollars in an envelope under his vest and refused to hand over the cash to the robbers who opened fire on him. He sustained a single bullet wound in the abdomen and came out of the car and tried to run away, but his son took out the dollars and gave to the robbers who fled on their motorbike.

The wounded Saleem was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. He was a resident of Nazimabad. One of the robbers wore a helmet, said the SP of Gulberg.

Two `carjackers` killed in encounter Two suspected carjackers were killed in a police `encounter`in the Safoora Goth area on Tuesday evening, police said.

They said that on Monday thesuspects had snatched an official vehicle and an sub-machine gun of an intelligence agency near the Rangoonwala Hall in Bahadurabad.

Anti-Car-Lifting Cell SSP Irfan Bahadur said that acting on a tipoff the police intercepted the suspects near Safoora Chowrangi when they were heading to Superhighway in the snatched car.

The suspects opened fire in their bid to flee and in the `retaliatory firing` they were killed, added the officer.

The snatched vehicle, the official SMG and one pistol were recovered from the suspect.

Their identity could not be ascertained till late in the night.

Man shot dead in Kalakot A 41-year-old man was kidnapped and laterfound shot dead in the Kalakot area of Lyari on Tuesday morning, the police said.

The bullet-riddled body of the man identified as Syed Shakeel Akhtar was found in Usmanabad.

He was kidnapped, murdered and later his body was thrown there, said City SSP Sheeraz Nazeer, adding that the police reached this conclusion because no cartridge was found at the spot.

His hands were also tied, he added.

Kalakot SHO Safdar Mashwani said Shakeel was a resident of Shadman Town, Sakhi Hassan, and had come for `some work` on Lawrence Road in Garden.
