Criminal cases against protesters

2014-11-12
ISLAMABAD: The authorities’ own failure to install a pedestrian bridge to allow people to safely cross the Islamabad Expressway has been brushed aside.

Instead cases have been registered under the Pakistan Penal Code and Anti-terrorism Act against those protesting deaths of pedestrians on Monday.

The case was registered in response to a complaint lodged by Kural SHO against 150 people for protesting, pelting policemen with stones and spreading panic in the area with firing in the area. The police detained some people on Monday during the protest but the formal arrest is yet to be made.

Over the registration of the case and detention of protesters, residents of areas along the Expressway staged another protest and labeled the action of the police as ‘victimisation’. The road was blocked for traffic. The protesters said the Capital Development Authority (CDA) had failed to install a pedestrian bridge despite repeated demands.— Staff Reporter
