Residents rally against gas suspension

By Our Correspondent 2014-11-12
GUJRANWALA: Residents of Wahdat Colony, Garjakh and Mian Sansi Road staged a demonstration on Tuesday outside Sui Northern Gas Pipeline Limited (SNGPL) headquarters against what they said suspension of gas supply to their localities.

The protesters alleged the company was supplying gas to industries in their area but domestic consumers were deprived of it. They chanted slogans against SNGPL and demanded that gas supply be restored to domestic consumers as housewives were facing a great deal of inconvenience to prepare breakfast and lunch for school-going children and other family members.

They attempted to enter the office but security guards foiled their bid by locking the main gate. They dispersed after senior officers of the company assured them that gas supply would be restored shortly.

GAS SEVERED: The SNGPL severed on Tuesday more than 51 gas connections of various industrial and commercial units on charges of tampering with meters and sent the gadgets to a Lahore laboratory for analysis.

A senior engineer of company, AsimMir, told Dawn that 22 teams had been formed for a crackdown on GT Road, Atawa, Bajwa, Sanaat, Sheikhupura and Naushera roads.

He said Regional Chief Engineer Muhammad Haroon Khan monitored the crackdown and visited various places. He said action against gas thieves would continue without any fear or favour.

PTI-PML-N TENSION: Tension erupted among local leaders of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf and ruling PML-N over the Nov 19 public meeting of PTI at Jinnah Stadium.

PTI District President Rana Naeemur Rehman submitted an application to police for registration of case against PML-N workers for removing and burning the posters and billboards of Imran Khan at Satellite Town. He also announced a rally in support of Imran Khan on Nov 13.

On the other hand, the PML-N youth wing also announced a rally in support of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Nov 14.

Meanwhile, PML-N local leadership called on City Police Officer Waqas Nazir at his office on Tuesday and discussed strategy for averting any clash on the occasion of PTPs public meeting.
