SWABI: The Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl has decided to move the Election Commission of Pakistan for the disqualification of its Chota Lahor tehsil councillor over defection.
JUI-F district chief Attaul Haq Darvaish told a party meeting here on Wednesday that a case would be filed with the ECP against Shahab Ali, who was elected on JUI-F ticket as tehsil councillor in the May local government elections but supported PTI candidate in tehsil nazim elections.
He said in return for election support, Shahab Ali was made tehsil naib nazim.
`Shahab Ali was elected Chota Lahor tehsil naib nazim under a deal with the PTI leadership,` he said.
Earlier, the ECP had disqualified Nur Jehan, who was elected a councillor on a seat reserved for women as a Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz candidate but later voted for the PTI candidate in tehsil nazim polls.
The JUI-F leader said the party wanted the ECP to disqualify Shahab Ali along the same lines.
Darvaish said the party would formally file a proper case for the councillor`s disqualifications in line with the third amendment to the local government law.
In the 20-strong tehsil council, the PTI has nine members and the opposition eight.
The JUI-F leader said in case of the councillor`s disqualification, the strength of the treasury and opposition in the house would become equal prompting his party to move a no confidence motion against tehsil nazim.
`Shahab Ali was expelled from the party four days ago when party leaders met in Peshawar,` he said.
Darvaish said the party chief, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, had yet to sign the disqualification reference and once that was done, the reference would be filed with the ECP.
`The reference is expected to be filed on Monday. It may take two or three weeks for decision,` he said.
BOY KILLED: A six-year-old child was run over and killed by a speeding tractor-trolley on Swabi-Jehangira Road here on Wednesday. Zaida police registered a case of the killing on the complaint of Nizar Ali, father of deceased Azmat Ali.
The complainant said speeding was to blame as driver Akhtar Shah lost control of the trolley and 1(illed his son.
The driver fled leaving the tractor-trolley behind.
The police seized the tractor-trolley, registered an FIR and began investigation.
However, no arrest was made by night.
PESCO EMPLOYEES` STRIKE: The Peshawar Electric Supply Company (Pesco) employees on Wednesday went on strike against the federal government`s plan to privatise Wapda. Though all Pesco offices were open, protesters didn`t allow anyone to work there.
The strike also turned away consumers seeking correction in electricity bills. The protesters warned Pesco workers would stage more protests if the government didn`t abandon Wapda sell-off. Correspondent
