PAT rubbishes govt`s claim of economic stability

By Our Staff Reporter 2016-11-12
LAHORE: The Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) has rejected the government`s claim of economic stability, questioning how could such claim be true when foreign remittances are declining, foreignanddomesticinvestment down and exports sliding? Issuing, what they called white paper, PTI general-secretary Khurram Nawaz Ghandapur said the government in a bid to compensate the financial losses was borrowing madly, pledging all its assets like motorways and historical buildings. Which kind of the economic development model is this, he questioned.

About a decade ago, the GDPwas growing at 7.5 per cent annually, which has now come down to 4.7pc. No-one knows whether the $46 billion inflow for PakistanChina Economic Corridor is loan, investment or gif t.

Even the parliament was not in the loop and so the government of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The total loan has swelled to $73 billion, with $13 billion of them taken by the current government.

The energy crisis has rendered over a million labourers jobless last year. Corruption is still the major problem. The government has so far pledged 73 historical buildings along with motorways of the country.

According to the World Hunger Index, Pakistan is at number 107 in the list of 118 states around the globe.According to the Human Development Index, Pakistan falls at 122 position among 138 states, and is one of those countries which have failed to invest basic human needs like education and health.

As per Transparency International, Pakistan stands at 116 position in total 168 assessed countries.

Even in these circumstances, the government has the cheeks to get a sponsored certification from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and then advertise it too.

Even the IMF report is only selectively shared with the people.

No-one has highlighted the issue of high loan ratio, which the IMF director noted and raised with the government.

Flanked by other leaders,Gandapur claims the only success that this government has achieved is to follow the IMF dictates in letter and spirit.

After coming to power, the PML-N government had assured the IMF about raising the electricity and gas rates in next three years and has stuck to its promise. That is why despite decreasing petroleum prices in the international market, Pakistani have been kept deprived of the benefit.

This picture only shows the hollowness of the of ficial claim of economic stability in the country. On the contrary, it shows how precarious the situation is and how all its figures are fudged for political mileage for the rulers, he concluded.Gandapur claims the only success that this government has achieved is to follow the IMF dictates in letter and spirit.
