Lecturer `tortured by husband`

TOBA TEK SINGH: Scores of teachers and students of the University of Jhang (UoJ) on Monday took out a rally at Jhang to condemn the alleged torture of a female varsity lecturer by her husband, who wants to grab her property.
The protesters, carrying banners and placards inscribed with the demand for the arrest of the accused, started from the UoJ campus, and marched up to the local press club and the office of the district police officer (DPO).They told reporters that the teacher`s husband is a lawyer and has secured bail before arrest from a court. They said the police should get the bail of the accused cancelled by the court and arrestthe accused.
They also urged the Punjab Bar Council and Jhang District Bar Association to cancel his practice licence.
Meanwhile, in her FIR registered by Jhang Satellite Town police under sections 354 and 337 of PPC, the complainant, a Lecturer in English, Nimra Zafar, said her husband Noor Zaman had been subjecting her to torture for the last four months over minor issues.
She said the accused has been forcing her to transfer ownership of herplot in his name and threatened that if she refused to accept his demand he will get her 13-year-old brother kidnapped. She said that Noor Zaman also got her signatures on a a stamp paper under duress.
She added that a few days ago the accused subjected her to brutal torture at her parents` house, leaving her injured and she was rescued and hospitalised by neighbourers.
STRIKE: Faisalabad Grain market traders observed a strike on Monday in protest against the murder of a fellow trader by unidentified attackers.
According to victim`s brother Shafiq, deceased trader Sheikh Hanif was attacked on Sunday night outside his house inMuhammadpura locality by two unidentified motorcyclists, when he was returning from mosque.
The traders demanded immediate arrest of the killers. Faisalabad Gulberg police have registered the case.
