Bannu protest ends as slain traders` families promised compensation

LAKKI MARWAT: The Bannu Qaumi Jirga announced to end the weeklong protest against the killing of three traders after a government team promised jobs and compensation to the bereaved families on Sunday.

The elders had set up a protest camp in Bannu city after the gruesome murder of traders in Mirali town of North Waziristan district.A shutdown and a wheel-jam strike were observed in the city the other day when negotiations between officials and elders failed.

The government team in the latest round of talks included provincial transport minister Malik Shah Mohammad of PTI, Bannu division commissioner Mateeullah Khan, regional police officer Syed Ashfaq Anwar and Bannu deputy commissioner Aun Haidar Gondal.

The elders included Malik Sherin Maalik, Shah Wazir, Maulana Abdul Ghaffar, MuftiAbdul Ghani, Malik Sheroz Khan and others.

On the occasion, the provincial minister announced provision of a job to one legal heir of the slain traders` families. He said the elements involved in lawlessness were the enemies of the people.

On the occasion, the divisional commissioner said people from all walks of life would have to come forward and play an effective role in maintaining peace and harmany in the region.

He announced Rs2.5 million compensa-tion for the families of each slain trader and said the family of a young man, who died during the protest, would get Rs500,000 compensation.

He assured that the killers of traders would be traced soon and brought to justice.

The elders thanked the provincial minister and divisional commissioner and said they would work with the government and local administration to improve law and order and promote peace in the region.
