WCLA about to complete Badshahi Mosque`s conservation

LAHORE: The Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA) is going to complete the conservation project of Badshahi Mosque, one of the significant historical monuments, built by Aurangzeb Alamgir in 167172.

The project was entrusted to the authority for conservation in 2022 by the government through the Auqaf Department. The total approved cost of the projectisRs350m.

The authority had constituted an advisory body of historians, architects, conservationists, engineers as well as representatives from Auqaf and archeology departments for decisions and implementation of the proposals. After the consent of this committee, physical works initiated at site.

The conservation of mosque chambers is in progress these days. So far 50pc work has been completed while the laying of electrical wires at toproofisin progress.

The conservation of the main entrance is also underway. The illumination of domes, minarets and front façade has been completed. As a part of this project, the toilet block was found in dilapidated condition and it`s also in the phase ofreconstruction.

On the other hand, stones inside the mosque are also in bad condition and they are being restored. The work on the roof is also 75pc complete.

The completion of this project isexpectedin June.Kamran Lashari, director general WCLA, said, `The conservation of Badshahi Mosque has been one of the priorities of our institution. We have made efforts to bring this mosque into its original and authentic shape. We are thankful to the government of Punjab for its trust in our institute. The conservation project of Badshahi Mosque is not limited to structural rehabilitation but it is important that the public visits and observes the historical significance of this place. For this, we have beenworking on public facilitation so that more tourists get an easy and comfortable experience at Badshahi Mosque`.

Mr Mubashar Hassan, the deputy director Conservation and Planning, WCLA, expressed his opinions and said, `We have tried to carefully conserve it while keeping its authenticity. Moreover, we have attempted to enhance its beauty by illuminating it. This conservation project has been executed accordingtointernational standards of conservation.
