Solutions or questions?

2023-02-13
THIS is with reference to the article `The `awam` and reform` (Jan 22) which supposedly presented many suggestions regarding the national economy, but they were mere enumeration of the problems, which everybody knew already. It never even came close to telling the readers what the solutions are, if any, and where to find them.

For example, to eliminate corruption we need honest people. Fine, but what is so reformative about it? Some other gems from the article included these remarkable revelations: `... to resume sustained growth requires the fiscal and current account deficits to be reduced ... `... The path to reducing CAD [current account deficit] is through maximising forex earnings by promoting exports...`; `We need a statesman-like leadership, willing to put its own stakes on the line in steering the economy towards the right track...` All these statements indicate someone is taking the readersforgranted.

The so-called `reforms` are, in fact, the problems. Tell us, if the writer or anybody else can, how to reduce the mounting fiscal and current account deficits. How to promote exports, and where is the statesman-like leadership? Syed Shamim Ahmed Karachi
