Political priorities

2025-02-13
PUBLIC display of humility, both in choice of words and attire, is essential for politicians. Even more essential is the fact that it must resonate with the people whose votes they seek.

Arrogance, obstinacy and display of wealth are liabilities in terms of political conduct. Merely the birth of a person inthe family of a renowned political leader does not entitle anyone to hold a public office of importance. Pakistan was not created to be a fiefdom of a few families.

There is no concept of dynastic rule; neither in Islam nor in democracy.

Statements like `power talks to power` merely justify the role of brute force in politics. Frequent unconstitutional interventions have derailed Mohammad Ali Jinnah`s vision of a modern democratic welfare state. The Father of the Nation had abandoned his successful legal practice in London in the 1930s to return to India and lead the political struggle for the creation of Pakistan. Today, cabinet ministers abandon the country to live abroad once they are out of power. We have come a long way, but in the wrong direction.
